# VAT returns and Booko: how does it work?

Booko tracks the VAT on your invoices and uses it to calculate the boxes of your VAT return. Filing with the Belastingdienst is not (yet) done from Booko: you file it yourself in Mijn Belastingdienst, or your accountant handles it for you.

## What do you do?

1. Upload all your purchase invoices and receipts (see "Upload purchase invoices and receipts").
2. Check invoices marked **Needs check**, especially the **VAT amount** and whether a cost is **Business** or **Personal**.
3. Create your sales invoices in Booko, or upload them.
4. Match your bank transactions so your books are complete.

## Does your accountant use Booko?

Your accountant prepares the VAT return in their own Booko workspace, checks the boxes and records when the return was filed. Questions about your return? Message your accountant via **Messages**.

## Good to know

- Booko doesn't send the return to the Belastingdienst itself and doesn't handle the payment.
- Does your business use the small business scheme (KOR)? Then a regular VAT return is usually not required for a period. Discuss this with your accountant.
- Booko support will never ask for your BSN, password or Belastingdienst login details in chat.

## Still stuck?

- A VAT amount on an invoice is wrong? Correct it via **Review** > **Edit**.
- Questions about deadlines, rates or what to declare are tax advice. The chat doesn't answer those: ask your accountant, or ask for a colleague in the chat if you don't have one.
